Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a set of techniques intended to improve mental health, emotional or behavioral issues of individuals, family members or a whole family's interactional climate.
Psychotherapy is performed by qualified practitioners and provides a formal and professional relationship within which patients/clients can profitably explore difficult, and often painful, emotions and experiences. These may include feelings of anxiety, depression, trauma, or perhaps the loss of meaning of ones life. These issues often make it hard for people to manage their lives and achieve their goals.
Psychotherapy is aimed at these problems, and attempts to solve — or help people themselves to solve — them via a number of different approaches and techniques. It is a process which seeks to help the person gain an increased capacity for choice, through which the individual becomes more autonomous and self determined.
The term counselling is often used interchangeably with psychotherapy.
